Featured on Grey Likes Weddings: Old World Jade
I've been thinking a lot about culture and traditions lately and this editorial came to mind. It was featured on Grey Likes Weddings last year and still remains to be one of my favorite editorials to date.
Coming from a mixed background and having spent years living and traveling about Asia I definitely have a fondness for Asian culture. I remember finding an old "People," magazine (think late 1990's) where they were highlighting Asian celebrity weddings. They had about 8 of them and only a photo or two each but I was mesmerized by it. I loved the beauty behind the traditions and formal attire that so deeply connected these couples not only to each other but their families. I had that in mind when I designed and shot this editorial and the old world feel of respect, honor and love were highly noted. The combining of Jade and blush tones were purposefully made as jade represents good luck and prosperity while blush remains a common color for love and romance in America. Blending the two together was not only pleasing to the eye but gave the palette a deeper meaning for me.
So for all your brides and grooms alike out there--embrace your culture. Whether it be a formal tea ceremony or the jumping over the broom, no matter how big or small let it shine throughout your day. Let it live and breathe and be part of this new and wonderful thing that you're creating. Down the line your grandchildren will adore hearing about it.
I loved seeing the moodier, more dramatic side of film throughout this editorial as well. It’s just such a versatile medium and spoke to the reverence of tradition.
