This lady and I go waaaaaay back. Like back to awkward teenage years when we'd tell everyone we were actually cousins because we were the only brown girls in the entire school at the time. We stayed close throughout middle school, high school, college and even now when we get together we don't miss a beat. She went on to marry an incredible man, build a smoothie empire (Admittedly, I had a green smoothie from her place EVERY.DANG.DAY when I was in town. No joke. Check 'em out here.) and bring to the world an adorable and inquisitive little boy. She's now due with a girl and the universe may as well celebrate NOW.
She confessed to me that they had first thought about having another when on vacation in Maui. Tying in the significance of this moment we decided to shoot a the base of an old volcano in a boho, beach dress adorned with florals. We may have been an ocean away from Hawaii but she was definitely channeling the island vibes.
It must've been a dozen times where I'd get overwhelmed with her "Beyonce Factor," and verbalize this to her with some embarrassing arm flails and she would laugh at my goofiness and turn away shyly because it's always the most beautiful people who don't see it. Annette, I hope this shows you just how luminous you are: as a person, as a friend and as a mother.
Shortly after this session was delivered it was featured on The Fount Collective, a gorgeous blog focused on fine art family photography.
